Sometimes referred to simply as KCMO, Kansas City is the single largest city in Missouri. The 2020 census results confirmed that the city had a population of more than 508,000 residents. That makes it the 36th most populous city in the country.
KCMO is part of what is known as the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. This area encompasses both sides of the Kansas-Missouri border, and has a population of more than 2.3 million people. KCMO itself is primarily in Jackson County, but parts of the city are also in Cass, Clay, and Platte counties.
The history of KCMO dates back to the 1830s, and the push to settle what was then considered frontier areas. The city served as a port on the Missouri River, making the transport of goods easier. Thanks to the location, it wasn't long until the town began to grow. Originally known as the town of Kansas, the name was changed to the City of Kansas in 1853.
