Located in Holt County, Mound City is found near the point where Interstate 29 and Missouri Route 118 meet. As of the 2020 census, the city had just over a thousand residents. This was down from the 2010 census, when Mound City had just over 1,100 residents.
When first established in 1858, Mound City was known as North Point. This was in harmony with the name of the post office, which had been established in 1855. The original name would remain in place for three years. In 1871, the name was changed in honor of the First People burial mounds found near the site.
One of the defining characteristics of Mound City is the presence of the Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. Found about five miles from the city, the Refuge is the site of the mass migration of spring snow geese. It's estimated that more than 300,000 people visit the Refuge each year, providing a significant economic boost to the community. The 7,500 acres Refuge is said to bring in around $2.6 million that benefits both Holt and Buchanan counties.
