Facts about Plattsburg, MO
Located in Clinton County, Plattsburg also serves as the county seat. It's part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The city is found along the Little Platte River. While much larger in the 19th century, Plattsburg had 2,222 as of the 2020 census.
The city has carried more than one name in times past. The settlement began life as Concord in 1833. It would not be until 1835 that the present name was chosen.
During the 1830s and until the Civil War, Plattsburg attracted a number of westward bound settlers from the American South. Primarily, the new settlers hailed from the western part of Virginia, and the central part of Kentucky. This led to the area receiving the nickname of "Little Dixie", owing to the fact that the settlers often brought along slaves as well as customs they were used to following.
Plattsburgh's status as the county seat made it a key location for trade as well as politics. At one time, the city enjoyed a robust meat processing industry that helped support the same business in nearby Kansas City. Today, the city is known more for its historic sites and for being a quiet place to live while working in larger cities.
