Facts about Lathrop, MO
Found in Clinton County, Lathrop is considered part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. As of 2020, the city had 2,278 residents. This was an increase over the 2,086 residents recorded for the 2010 census.
The city's history goes back to 1867, when the city was established as a stop on the Cameron Cutoff Branch, a line belonging to the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad. The city was platted at that time, and named in honor of John L. Lathrop. A post office was established soon after, in 1868.
From the beginning of the 20th century and extending into the post-World War I era, Lathrop was known as the Mule Capital of the World. This is due to the large volume of mules and horses that were sold during that time. When the market began to falter in the 1920s, the city continued with industries like agriculture keeping the community going. Even so, mules continue to figure into the city's heritage. A number of contemporary businesses, roads, and even the high school mascot include the word "mule" in their names.
